| We recently became aware that Ford Motor Company is offering a kit to increase the fluid capacity on the E4OD transmission with two wheel drive. The E4OD transmission is used on the F series pick-ups, Econoline and Expedition. The kit consists of a deeper pan (4x4) and corresponding fillter along with 3/8" cooler lines (instead of 5/16" cooler lines). Usage by the factory of this kit has been limited to vehicles ordered for fleet use. Rumor has it that the kit will be offered in the aftermarket to back fit vehicles built since 1991. If you service fleet vehicles with E4OD transmissions you may encounter the 4x4 filter in a two wheel drive vehicle. Simply use ATP Kit No. B-104 which is desined for the 4x4 application. The AODE-W transmission found on full size and rear wheel drive cars (Ford, Lincoln, Mercury) as well as F series and Econline trucks uses the 4x4 filter (ATP No. B-144) on all vehicles from 1996 and up. Again, Ford is increasing the fluid capacity by utilizing a deeper pan. If you are flushing the cooler lines on any 1997 F series 150/250, Expedition and Econoline under 8500 GVW equiped with the E4OD transmission, you must also back flush the cooler bypass valve. The valve was added to allow for a faster trans fluid warm up during cold weather. The bypass valve is located at the transmission where the cooler lines would normally attach to the transmission fittings. Please see illustration. |
